Adding Integers

-
Same Sign-
1.

Positive:  example- (+9)+(+4)= (+13) +++++++++ ++++

Strategy- You just simply add the two numbers
(9+4) together and put a plus sign to represent a positive answer.

2.

Negative: example- (-8)+(-6)= (-12) -------- ------

Strategy- You just simply add the two numbers
(8+6) together and put a negative sign to represent a negative answer.

*DEPENDING IF IT IS A NEGATIVE OR POSITIVE QUESTION WITH THE SAME SIGN YOUR ANSWER WILL HAVE THE SAME SIGN AS THE QUESTION EITHER A NEGATIVE - OR A POSITIVE + *

                                                             -Different Sign-
1. Positive Answer

Different Signs:  example- (+10)+(-3)=(+7) +++++ ---

                      Strategy- You can use chips to visually see how this works.

++++++++++
                                     ---

*SEE HOW MANY ZERO PAIRS YOU CAN MAKE, IN THIS CASE 3 (REMEMBER 1 POSITIVE AND 1 NEGATIVE MAKES A ZERO PAIR) WHEN YOU CANCLE OUT THE 3 ZERO PAIRS YOU ARE LEFT WITH 7 POSITIVE SIGNS OR CHIPS YOUR ANSWER IS POSITIVE 7 (+7)* YOUR BASICALLY TAKING AWAY -3 FROM +10 -> (+10)-(-3)= (+7)

2. Negative Answer

Different
Signs:  example- (-7)+(+5)=(-2) +++++++ -----

                    Strategy- You can use chip to visually see how this works.
                            -------
                                        +++++

SEE HOW MANY ZERO PAIRS YOU CAN MAKE, IN THIS CASE 5 (REMEMBER 1 POSITIVE AND 1 NEGATIVE MAKES A ZERO PAIR) WHEN YOU CANCLE OUT THE 5 ZERO PAIRS YOU ARE LEFT WITH 2 NEGATIVE SIGNS OR CHIPS YOUR ANSWER IS NEGATIVE 2 (-7)YOUR BASICALLY TAKING AWAY +5 FROM -7 -> (-7)-(+5)= (-2)
